Pair of Wall Lamps by Fritz Kurz for Orrefors, Sweden, 1940s Striking pair of Swedish wall lamps designed by Fritz Kurz for Orrefors in the 1940s. Combining substantial crystal glass with brass, the sconces have a beautifully sculptural presence and demonstrate the exceptional glass craftsmanship for which Orrefors became internationally renowned. Each lamp features a thick, heavily formed crystal-glass block mounted against a simple brass backplate. The restrained construction allows the glass itself to become the principal decorative element, with its textured surface catching, refracting and diffusing the light in different ways depending on the viewing angle. When illuminated, the brass behind the glass introduces a warm golden tone that contrasts beautifully with the clarity and weight of the crystal. The result is an atmospheric light that emphasizes the depth and relief of the glass rather than simply exposing the light source. The substantial thickness of the glass gives the lamps an almost architectural quality. Even when unlit, they function as decorative glass objects on the wall, with changing daylight revealing the irregularities, reflections and optical qualities of the material. Fritz Kurz worked with Orrefors during a particularly important period in Swedish glass design. These sconces beautifully illustrate the meeting of decorative art and functional lighting, combining the craftsmanship of the glassworks with the restrained forms associated with Swedish Modern design. Their relatively simple geometry also makes the lamps remarkably versatile. They work beautifully as a pair beside a mirror, doorway or fireplace, as bedside sconces, or positioned along a hallway where the sculptural glass can be appreciated both illuminated and unlit. A refined and highly decorative example of Swedish 1940s lighting, combining exceptional glasswork, simple brass detailing and a warm atmospheric quality. Good original vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with their age.
