Wall Sconces in Brass and Opaline Glass by Hans-Agne Jakobsson

€800 each

Pair of Wall Sconces in Brass and Opaline Glass by Hans-Agne Jakobsson, Sweden, 1960s Elegant pair of Swedish mid-century wall sconces designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson for Markaryd in the 1960s. Combining warm brass with softly glowing opaline glass, the lamps display Jakobsson’s characteristic interest in filtered light, refined materials and understated decorative detailing. Each sconce features a cylindrical opaline glass shade held within a beautifully proportioned brass structure. The milky glass gently diffuses the light source, producing a soft and atmospheric illumination rather than a harsh direct light. Perforated detailing in the brass adds another dimension to the design. When illuminated, the small openings allow points of light to escape through the metal, creating a subtle decorative effect and emphasizing the warm golden character of the brass. The contrast between the luminous opaline glass and the more architectural brass construction gives the lamps a particularly elegant presence. Their clean vertical form is restrained enough for a modern interior, while the warmth of the materials gives them the inviting character associated with Scandinavian lighting of the period. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of Sweden’s most prolific lighting designers of the post-war era and was particularly interested in controlling and softening artificial light. His designs frequently incorporate layered shades, perforated metals and other techniques that conceal the bulb and create a warmer, more atmospheric illumination. The sconces work beautifully as a pair beside a mirror, fireplace or doorway, but are equally suitable as bedside lights or atmospheric accent lighting in a living room or hallway. A refined example of Swedish mid-century lighting, combining sculptural simplicity with the warm and atmospheric quality for which Jakobsson’s designs are particularly appreciated. Very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with their age. The brass displays a natural patina developed over time. Wiring: All our lamps are wired for EU standards.
