Pair of Wall Lamps by Erik Tidstrand for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), Sweden, 1950s Charming pair of Swedish wall lamps designed by Erik Tidstrand for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in the 1950s. Combining warm brass, sculpted yellow glass and cream-coloured metal, the lamps have a distinctive character that is both playful and refined. Each lamp features a gracefully curved brass arm supporting a beautifully shaped yellow glass shade. The softly coloured glass gently diffuses the light, producing a warm and atmospheric glow while giving the lamps a particularly inviting appearance when illuminated. At the lower part of each lamp is a cream-coloured metal sphere incorporating the switch. This unusual detail is both functional and decorative, introducing a contrasting geometric form to the sweeping brass arm and organic shape of the glass shade. The combination of different materials and forms gives the lamps a strong sculptural quality. Despite their relatively compact proportions, they have a distinctive presence on the wall and demonstrate the attention to detail associated with Nordiska Kompaniet's lighting production during the mid-20th century. Erik Tidstrand was an important figure in Swedish lighting design and worked extensively for Nordiska Kompaniet. His designs are characterised by carefully balanced proportions, elegant metalwork and an inventive approach to functional details, qualities clearly expressed in this pair. The lamps work beautifully as bedside lights or positioned beside a mirror, artwork or doorway, and are equally attractive as decorative accent lighting in a living room or hallway. A charming and unusual example of Swedish 1950s lighting, combining functional elegance with a distinctly playful use of colour and form. Very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use and a natural patina to the brass. One of the yellow glass shades has a minor chip along the upper edge.
