Swedish Grace Coffee Table in Elm Root, Sweden, 1930s Elegant Swedish Grace coffee table from the 1930s, combining a beautifully figured elm-root veneer with a distinctly architectural and decorative base. The table is a refined example of the sophisticated furniture produced in Sweden during the interwar period, when classical influences were gradually giving way to a more streamlined modern aesthetic. The substantial circular tabletop is finished in richly figured elm-root veneer, whose swirling grain and warm golden-brown tones give the surface an almost painterly quality. The expressive character of the wood provides a striking contrast to the carefully controlled geometry of the construction beneath. The tabletop is supported by four richly decorated legs, connected at the bottom by a cross-form structure. The sculptural treatment of the legs adds depth and rhythm to the design while retaining the symmetry and sense of balance associated with Swedish Grace furniture. Swedish Grace developed during the 1920s and 1930s as a distinctly Scandinavian interpretation of classicism and Art Deco. Furniture from the period often combined luxurious materials and fine craftsmanship with simplified forms and restrained ornamentation, qualities beautifully represented in this table. With its generous circular form and unusually decorative base, the table has a strong presence from every angle.
