Danish Vanity Table or Desk in Teak by Kurt Østervig, Denmark

€2.600

Vanity Table / Desk in Teak by Kurt Østervig, Denmark, 1960s Elegant Danish mid-century vanity table or desk designed by Kurt Østervig in the 1960s. Crafted in beautifully figured teak, the piece combines a clean, understated exterior with a cleverly designed interior, reflecting the Scandinavian emphasis on furniture that is both refined and highly functional. At first glance, the piece presents itself as a beautifully proportioned writing desk or console table, with a long rectangular top supported by slender tapered legs. The warm tone and expressive grain of the teak provide a natural decorative quality, allowing the simplicity of the form to remain the focus. The tabletop lifts to reveal the table's original function as a vanity. A mirror is integrated into the underside of the hinged top, while a series of fitted compartments beneath provides practical storage for cosmetics, jewellery and other smaller objects. When closed, these elements are completely concealed, transforming the vanity into an elegant and uncluttered desk. This dual functionality is one of the most appealing aspects of the design. Østervig incorporated considerable storage and utility without compromising the clarity of the exterior, resulting in a piece that adapts particularly well to modern interiors where versatility and efficient use of space are important. The fine proportions, carefully executed joinery and rich teak are characteristic of high-quality Danish furniture from the period. Rather than relying on ornamentation, the design derives its character from craftsmanship, material and the thoughtful integration of its various functions. Equally suitable as a traditional dressing table, writing desk or elegant console, the piece offers a sophisticated combination of practicality and Scandinavian mid-century design. Very good condition, partly restored by the previous owner, sanded through the veneer on the side of the drawers (hardly visible, see picture). One dark stain on the tabletop, light signs of use and age.
