Swedish Coffee Table in Acid-Stained Pine, Sweden, 1930s–40s Characterful Swedish coffee table from the 1930s–40s, crafted in solid acid-stained pine. The table belongs to the tradition of robust cabin furniture that emerged in Sweden during the early modernist period, when designers like Axel Einar Hjorth increasingly explored simple constructions and rustic native materials. The elongated rectangular top is supported by substantial legs and a sturdy wooden framework, giving the table a strong architectural presence. The straightforward construction allows the proportions and character of the pine to become the defining features of the design. The acid-stained surface has developed a particularly beautiful patina over the decades, with variations in tone, grain and wear giving the wood a rich and expressive appearance. Rather than detracting from the piece, these traces of use enhance the rustic character that makes this type of early Swedish pine furniture so appealing.
