Swedish Art Deco Side Table / Bar Table
€1.500
Swedish Art Deco Side Table / Bar Table, Sweden, 1930s Exceptional Swedish Art Deco side or bar table from the 1930s, displaying impressive craftsmanship and an unusually elaborate combination of exotic woods, decorative inlays and ingenious storage. The tabletop is particularly striking, combining richly figured elm-root and mahogany veneers with period-typical inlaid motifs depicting liquor and cigarettes. Protected beneath a glass top, these playful details reveal the table's original function as a piece intended for entertaining and give it a wonderfully distinctive character. The sides of the table are equally carefully considered, incorporating several small shelves and locking compartments for storing bottles, glasses and other bar accessories. Mahogany and contrasting zebrano veneers emphasize the geometric construction and bring additional richness to the compact architectural form. Despite its relatively restrained proportions, the table reveals new details from every angle. The combination of luxurious veneers, practical concealed storage and witty pictorial decoration is characteristic of the sophisticated approach to Swedish furniture making during the interwar period. The piece can be used as originally intended as a compact bar table, while its proportions also make it highly suitable as a side or occasional table. Even when closed, the richly figured veneers and decorative tabletop give it a strong sculptural presence. A charming and unusual example of Swedish Art Deco furniture, combining fine cabinetmaking with functionality and a distinctly playful sense of luxury. Very good original vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its age. One of the locks can be somewhat tricky to open.
