Swedish Bench or Side Table in Solid Pine by Sven Larsson, Sweden, 1960s Striking Swedish bench or low side table designed by Sven Larsson in the 1960s. Crafted entirely from solid pine, the piece is an early example of the robust pine furniture that emerged in Sweden during the late 1960s and became an important part of Scandinavian design in the following decade. The bench features a substantial rectangular top supported by solid, sculpturally shaped legs. Its construction is deliberately simple and honest, allowing the proportions, joinery and natural character of the pine to define the design. Despite the substantial dimensions of the timber, the carefully considered structure gives the piece a beautifully balanced architectural quality. Sven Larsson was one of the pioneers of Sweden’s solid-pine furniture movement, developing a distinctive design language based on generous proportions, visible construction and an appreciation for the expressive qualities of the material. His work helped establish the robust aesthetic that would become increasingly prominent in Swedish interiors throughout the 1970s. This particular example is signed underneath and is believed to be an early piece, produced before Larsson’s furniture production expanded. Its simplicity and strong sculptural presence make it equally appealing as a piece of functional furniture and as an expression of this important period in Swedish design. Highly versatile, the piece can be used as a bench, low side table, coffee table or display surface, and works particularly well in both contemporary and Scandinavian interiors. Very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. The pine surface has been carefully refinished.
